Dispatch
Three weeks at the University of Queensland
A research visit to Janet Wiles' lab at UQ, conversations on underresourced-language technology, and a case for speech as a signal in behaviour monitoring.

The visit
Between 27 July and 14 August 2026 I visited Professor Janet Wiles at the University of Queensland, dropping by her lab a couple of times a week.
Conversations
Janet and I met several times to compare notes on our respective research, including her lab’s work on mycelial networks and language technology for underresourced languages. I also met with Dr Chelsea Dobbins, who works on behaviour and emotion monitoring, and made the case for speech as an additional signal in that work.
